Food safety is commonly understood in terms of food ingredients and storage practices, while the safety of food containers that directly contact food and beverages is often overlooked. In fact, chemical substances from food packaging may migrate into food and pose potential health risks, particularly among school-aged children who are considered a vulnerable population. Limited student literacy regarding food container safety remains a challenge in preventing early exposure to hazardous substances. This community service activity aimed to improve students’ knowledge of food container safety through a school-based promotive and preventive educational approach. The activity was conducted in collaboration with SMP Negeri 56 Palembang and involved eighth-grade students as participants. A pre-experimental one-group pre-test–post-test design was employed. Educational sessions were delivered through interactive lectures supported by visual media, discussions, and question-and-answer activities. Students’ knowledge levels were assessed before and after the intervention using a structured questionnaire. The results demonstrated an increase in the mean knowledge score from 3.03 ± 1.54 at pre-test to 6.00 ± 1.11 at post-test. This improvement reflects an increase in knowledge attainment from approximately 43% to 86% and was statistically significant (p < 0.001). These findings indicate that food container safety education is effective in enhancing students’ knowledge. This activity is expected to serve as an initial step in fostering safer consumption habits and strengthening promotive and preventive environmental health efforts within the school setting.
