Abstract

Matter of mathematical stories is a mathematical problem that is arranged relating to the reality that exists in the student environment that is useful to train students to see the relationship of mathematics with their lives and improve their understanding of a mathematical concept. Regarding this, in learning mathematics there are still many students who find it difficult to solve story problems. This study aims to describe the difficulties of students of class XI IPA 2 in SMA Negeri 8 Medan in solving story problems on the subject of opportunity. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive study. Data collection techniques in this study were with tests and interviews. Difficulties experienced by students are analyzed based on the objects of study or basic mathematical objects (facts, concepts, operations, and principles). From the results of data analysis, the difficulties experienced by students in completing problem story opportunities, namely: 1) Difficulty of facts, students wrong in making plans of completion possible because of errors in interpreting the purpose of the problem, 2) Difficulty of concepts, students cannot distinguish the use of formulas combination and permutation, 3) Difficulties in procedures, students still have difficulty in carrying out operations of calculating factorial numbers, 4) Difficulties of principle, students still have difficulty in using existing principles such as "rules of deletion" in the form of factorial division. The factors that cause students difficulty in completing problem story opportunities, among others, are due to mastery of concepts that have not been good, lack of practice in working on problems, and lack of student interest in learning mathematics.
